DATA

Accessing CLAES Data Sets

The CLAES data products are archived at level 3AT and level 3AL for each of 23 species retrieved, for each day that the instrument was taking data. Level 3A atmospheric data represent the instrument geophysical information transformed onto a common spatial grid of approximately one-half scale-height altitude intervals and equally spaced along the measurement trajectory in time ("level 3AT," at 65.5-s centers) or latitude ("level 3AL," every 4 deg starting at the equator). Each level 3AT file contains the mixing ratio for the gas at 20 different altitudes in the stratosphere, for up to 1320 different places on the earth along the measurement track. The level 3AL files are level 3AT files which have been longitudinally averaged over 4 degree wide bands in latitude.

Data Version 7 applies to the period Jan 9, 1992 - May 5, 1993. Data Versions 8 and 9 apply to the period Oct 25, 1991 - May 5, 1993. Not every day in these time periods has data since the CLAES door was closed during the UARS yaw-around periods, calibration days, and a few days that data could not be transmitted to the ground. The 3AT and 3AL data files were produced by the UARS CDHF at NASA Goddard using software developed by the CLAES team at Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory.

Retrieving CLAES data

The CLAES data files can be obtained using ftp from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC). Small portions of the data of particular interest and plots can be found on the CLAES anonymous ftp site.
CLAES data can be obtained from the DAAC by:

1. On your computer type: telnet daac.gsfc.nasa.gov
2. When the DAAC ask for login: type: daacims
3. When it asks for password: type: gsfcdaac

You may have to register the first time that you access the DAAC. Follow the online instructions to select and order a particular subset of CLAES data. A few hints may speed up the process of obtaining the data set that is desired. A mouse is not used. Instead, the tab key and arrow keys are used to move around on the screen. ESC v (striking the ESC key and the v) brings up the valid choices. CR (carriage return) selects the desired item. ESC g means go search or go order. If you correctly order a data set, you will be given a 4 digit number and told you will receive an e-mail message when the data is ready (usually a few days). At that time, when you log on to the DAAC you will be asked if you want to go to the ftp area. You will then be asked for your name, password, and directory where the data file is to be sent. The DAAC sends the data file to your computer. Extracting the file sent yields a number of files, incuding c and FORTRAN programs to read the data files.

Portions of the CLAES data in ASCII files and postscript plots can also be obtained by anonymous ftp on either a VMS or Silicon Graphics computer, by contacting the relevant CLAES person in advance. Longitudinally averaged data can also be made available as a netCDF file. Another possibility is that a portion of the CLAES data could be be made available in an IDL restore format. An IDL program could then be used to make plots of that portion of the data.
